Do you want to find out about the different water filter systems when traveling or hiking? Are you preparing for a trek and wondering how to filter the water? Are you looking for a filter bottle for traveling?
What is the water filter?
A water filter is a device that separates unwanted elements from a liquid. Turbid water is passed through the filter to trap impurities. Thanks to the filters, we can eliminate particles in suspension as well as micro-organisms, such as bacteria. A very practical method for hiking, trekking or traveling.
There are many types of water filters: cartridge or membrane, ceramic or fiberglass, mechanical or associated with other chemical treatments, equipped with activated carbon, equipped with silver particles…
Do we need to buy a backpacking water filter?
There are few water filters for travelers that offer a filter fine enough to retain viruses. You should know that the majority of pathogens responsible for turista are bacteria. Many travelers use a filtration system that does not eliminate viruses and are very satisfied with it, such as the life straw filter bottle which is one of the most used.
3 types of water filters while hiking
1 coarse filter
Most travelers are faced with water withdrawal in kind leave with a fine filtration system. However, in an emergency, or when nothing is planned, it can be a good solution to use a coarse filtration method.
We can use :
1 a cloth, a paper, a coffee filter, a sock (clean!).
natural materials: sand, coal, gravel… It is possible to manufacture filters either by combining different layers of these natural materials.
Coarse filtration will make it possible to retain the largest particles of earth, sand, and mud... However, the water is not drinkable because fine particles and chemical and organic contaminants (bacteria, viruses, and protozoa) are not eliminated.
2 Gravity water filter
Two containers are needed here. Unclean water is 'suspended' high. It passes through the filter and is collected further down. Systems designed for travelers have flexible pockets (nylon or plastic) that must be hung.
You must provide a container to collect drinking water (a saucepan, a cup, a water bag, a can, etc.). A system to stop the water is provided, a bit like a tap.
Gravity filters seem to us to be more suitable for group travel, motorhomes, boats, bicycles, canoes, and for families. The filtered water capacity can accommodate up to 10 people (for large-capacity gravity filters).
