It is perhaps integral to any notion of "progress" that we behold historical peoples as scarcely equal to their creeds as unambiguously committed likewise, so boundless proved their license in such commitment that little did they find impermissible except in denial of such creeds. It is only in the ambiguity of modern peoples wittingly or otherwise creedless that we find permission so lacking as to suggest us instead beset by the boundless ineffability of creeds which be our equal merely in the weightiness of their combined number--really, their innumerability--and beheld only in waking as from a nightmare. This license so abundant in the auspices of the living God (as opposed that lacking in Godโs death) is the stark obverse of the Lacanian counter to a familiar refrain that "If there is no God, then everything is prohibited." Both this counter and the obverse distressingly bear out yet more perniciously in consideration of the "real god" observed by Marx. Indeed is it here that ideological inculcation reveals itself as best operative unconsciously, yet somehow better still in hyperconscious excess--believing most fervently in not knowing we do so but still more in knowing better than to believe. This is all to say that however engrossing the nightmare, the weight of it can hardly register until upon awakening is it known all too well and so swiftly forgotten in knowing, yet never to be so handily expelled.
