Coinbase, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange operator, launched its UK operations back in 2018, allowing UK customers to buy, sell, and trade cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. To operate in the UK, Coinbase obtained an e-money license from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which allows the exchange to provide payment services and issue digital wallets for storing cryptocurrencies.
Since then, Coinbase has expanded its offerings in the UK, introducing new features such as the ability to use British pounds (GBP) to buy and sell cryptocurrencies. The exchange has also added support for new cryptocurrencies, including XRP and Bitcoin Cash. Coinbase Pro, a professional trading platform aimed at institutional investors and experienced traders, has also been launched in the UK with advanced trading features like margin trading and order types not available on Coinbase's retail platform.
Coinbase's entry into the UK market has been seen as a positive development for the cryptocurrency industry, as it provides UK customers with greater access to cryptocurrencies and legitimizes the industry in the eyes of regulators. However, as with any emerging industry, there are still concerns around regulation and consumer protection that need to be addressed.
