Ready to join the next generation of social media—onchain? With the Base network by Coinbase, you can create a decentralized social profile that gives you control, portability, and authentic ownership of your identity and content. This guide explains how to go from absolute beginner to having your first onchain social profile on Base, step by step.
You’ll need an Ethereum-compatible wallet to interact with Base. One of the most beginner-friendly options is MetaMask.
Go to <metamask.io> and install the browser extension or mobile app.
Follow the prompts to create a new wallet. Back up your seed phrase and keep it safe.
After setup, open your wallet and note your public Ethereum address.
Base runs on its own Ethereum Layer 2 network, so you need to add it to your wallet.
Open MetaMask, click your account icon, then “Settings” > “Networks.”
Click “Add Network” and enter:
Network name: Base Mainnet
RPC URL: https://mainnet.base.org
Chain ID: 8453
Currency Symbol: ETH
Block Explorer URL: https://basescan.org
Save and switch to your new Base network.
To use Base, you’ll need ETH on Base for transaction fees (“gas”).
Buy ETH on a major exchange (e.g., Coinbase, Binance).
Bridge ETH from Ethereum mainnet to Base:
Use Base Bridge.
Connect your wallet.
Select “Ethereum Mainnet” as the source; “Base” as the destination.
Enter the ETH amount and bridge. Transfers may take a few minutes.
Several decentralized social platforms have launched on Base. The most prominent is Farcaster (via clients like Warpcast). Others include Lens Protocol and CyberConnect.
For this guide, let’s use Farcaster (Warpcast) as the example.
Go to Warpcast.
Connect your Base-compatible wallet.
Follow the instructions to create a new Farcaster profile (called a “fid”).
You may need to pay a small fee (~$5 in ETH) to mint your profile onchain.
Choose a unique username (your onchain social handle).
Approve the transaction in your wallet. Wait a few moments for confirmation.
Now you have your own onchain decentralized social identity!
Once your profile is minted, you can:
Set a profile photo, bio, and links.
Start posting (“casts”), follow other users, and join communities.
All of your data, followers, and content are stored onchain, giving you ownership and easy migration between clients.
You can enhance your profile’s social presence with a human-readable Base Name (.base), like <yourname.base> via the Base Name Service.
Go to the Base Name Service website.
Search for your desired .base name.
Register it with your wallet (may require a small annual fee in ETH).
You can link this name to your wallet and Farcaster profile.
Never share your seed phrase.
Only use official links.
Keep some ETH in your wallet for future activities and gas fees.
You’ve gone from zero to having your own onchain social profile on Base! Now you can:
Truly own your digital identity.
Control your content.
Move freely between social platforms without losing your profile or followers.
Web3 social is just getting started—welcome to the future!

Great news update 👍
Base's onchain social guide explains creating a wallet (MetaMask), adding Base, funding for gas, picking an onchain protocol (Farcaster), minting a fid, and setting up a profile with a photo, bio, and links. It notes ownership of identity and data across clients, plus safety tips. @upsidecrypto
It's going to be a big week for base.
