Und es gibt sie doch noch, die guten Nachrichten. Auf der diesjährigen San Diego Comic Con wurden unlängst weitere Details zu den kommenden Avengers-Filmen bekannt gegeben. So hat man sich von der „The Kang Dynasty“ komplett verabschiedet und macht daraus „Avengers: Doomsday“. Und nun ratet mal, wer zum Essen kommt? Richtig: Robert Downey Jr. wird zurückkehren! Nur nicht als Tony Stark / Iron Man, sondern als Dr. Doom! 😲

„Neue Maske, gleiche Aufgabe“, sagte Downey Jr. während der Präsentation von Marvel Studios auf der SDCC in Halle H, wo sich der „Iron Man”-Darsteller überraschend unerwartet als MCU Doctor Doom auf der Bühne entlarvte. Der für seine Rolle in „Oppenheimer“ mit einem Oscar ausgezeichnete Star wird eine Multiversum-Version des Erzfeindes der Fantastischen Vier in den neu betitelten Filmen „Avengers: Doomsday“ und „Avengers: Secret Wars“ spielen, die von dem Regie-Duo Anthony und Joe Russo, den Regisseuren von „Avengers: Infinity War“ und „Avengers: Endgame“, mit ihrer Rückkehr ins Marvel Cinematic Universe inszeniert werden.

Anthony Russo erklärt: „Diese vier Filme [neben den genannten drehten sie auch „Captain America: The Winter Soldier“ und Captain America: Civil War“, Anm,] waren unglaublich, und sie haben uns kreativ ausgebrannt, mit all unseren Emotionen auf dem Tiefpunkt. Seitdem haben Joe und ich durch eine sehr besondere Geschichte möglicherweise einen Weg nach vorn mit euch allen gefunden.“

Kevin Feige, Präsident der Marvel Studios, enthüllte den neuen Titel für den fünften Avengers-Film und dessen Fortsetzung, „Avengers: Secret Wars“. Die beiden Filme sind weiterhin für Mai 2026 und Mai 2027 datiert und sollen die Multiverse-Saga und Phase 6 des MCU abschließen.

Details zur Handlung werden selbstverständlch unter Verschluss gehalten und „Deadpool & Wolverine“ hat gezeigt, dass Marvel scheinbar sehr effizient darin ist, zumindest bis zum Kinostart sämtliche Spoiler zu vermeiden. Es heißt aber, die nächsten Avengers-Filme, die das Ende besagter Phase markieren, werden sich von Jonathan Hickmans Secret Wars-Storyline aus dem Jahr 2015 inspirieren lassen, in der Victor Von Doom die gesamte Realität als Gottkaiser Doom beherrschte, nachdem alternative Dimensionen während universumszerstörender Invasionen kollidierten.

Die Fantastischen Vier — Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Susan Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) und Ben Grimm/the Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) — sind ebenfalls für ein Cross-over mit den mächtigsten Helden der Erde in Doomsday und Secret Wars bestätigt. Und mal unter uns: Marvel fand einen Weg, Logan/Wolverine von Toten zurückzuholen, da wird es bei Iron Man ja wohl auch möglich sein. Zumal Kevin Feige in der jüngsten Vergangenheit entsprechend verdächtige Äußerungen machte. Sinngemäß sei der neue Deadpool-Film ein gutes Beispiel, wie man das machen kann. Und Marvel hat in den Comics auch Brotkrumen gestreut, die sich aufpicken ließen.

„Avengers: Doomsday“, angeführt von Robert Downey Jr., ist der erste Marvel-Film des Schauspielers seit „Endgame“, der bekanntlich mit Tony Starks Opfer zur Rettung des Universums endete. Erst im letzten Monat erklärte der Schauspieler, er sei „überraschend aufgeschlossen für die Idee“ geworden, ins MCU zurückzukehren, nachdem er den Eisernen in 10 Filmen zwischen 2008 und 2019 gespielt hatte. „Es ist einfach verrückt in meiner DNA verankert. Es ist wahrscheinlich der Charakter, der mir am ähnlichsten ist, den ich je gespielt habe, auch wenn er viel cooler ist als ich“, so Downey Jr. über Stark.

Der kommende Filmplan von Marvel Studios umfasst „Captain America: Brave New World“ (14. Februar 2025), „Thunderbolts“ (5. Mai 2025), „The Fantastic Four: First Steps“ (25. Juli 2025), „Blade“ (7. November 2025), „Avengers: Doomsday“ (1. Mai 2026) und „Avengers: Secret Wars“ (7. Mai 2027). Die genannten Daten beziehen sich auf die US-Kinostarts, dürften bei uns aber sehr ähnlich ausfallen. Von dieser Superhelden-Erschöpfung bzw. Übersättigung, sollte ich je welche verspürt haben, ist jedenfalls nichts mehr zu spüren!

“New mask, same task,” Downey Jr. said during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at SDCC, where the Iron Man actor shockingly revealed himself as the MCU’s Doctor Doom. The Oscar-winning star from Oppenheimer will portray a multiverse version of the Fantastic Four’s arch-nemesis in the newly titled Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which are being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo—the duo behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame—as they make their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Anthony Russo explained: “Those four films [in addition to the ones mentioned, they also directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War] were incredible, but they left us creatively drained, completely emotionally spent. Since then, Joe and I may have found a very special story that gave us a way forward—with all of you.”

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed the new title for the fifth Avengers film and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars. The two films are still slated for May 2026 and May 2027, respectively, and will conclude the Multiverse Saga and Phase 6 of the MCU.

Naturally, plot details remain tightly under wraps. And as Deadpool & Wolverine has proven, Marvel seems to be remarkably good at keeping spoilers under control—at least until opening day. However, it's said that the next Avengers films will draw inspiration from Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars storyline, where Victor Von Doom ruled reality itself as the godlike Doom after alternate dimensions collided in multiverse-ending incursions.

And Marvel has been dropping breadcrumbs in the comics that might be picked up.

Avengers: Doomsday, led by Robert Downey Jr., marks the actor’s first Marvel movie since Endgame—which, as we all remember, ended with Tony Stark sacrificing himself to save the universe. Just last month, Downey said he had become “surprisingly open” to the idea of returning to the MCU after playing Iron Man in 10 films between 2008 and 2019. “It’s just crazily embedded in my DNA. It’s probably the character most like me that I’ve ever played—though he’s a lot cooler than I am,” said Downey Jr. about Stark.

Marvel Studios’ upcoming film slate includes Captain America: Brave New World (February 14, 2025), Thunderbolts (May 5, 2025), The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25, 2025), Blade (November 7, 2025), Avengers: Doomsday (May 1, 2026), and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 7, 2027). These are the U.S. release dates, but European ones are likely to be very close. And any superhero fatigue I might have felt before? Totally gone!
