Es ist noch gar nicht so lange her, da habe ich Euch an dieser Stelle das (auch Wochen nach der Veröffentlichung immer noch) ganz, ganz wunderbare Album „Ghost of the Light“ von Emma Hewitt vorstellen dürfen. Nach mehr als zehn Jahren, in denen die Künstlerin gewiss nicht untätig gewesen ist, war es dennoch aber erst das zweite Album, das ihrem kreativen Geiste entsprungen ist. Da ich der Meinung bin, dass Emmas Musik in unseren Breitengraden immer noch viel zu wenige Menschen kennen – und auch, weil ich schlicht und ergreifend neugierig war, das gebe ich gerne zu – habe ich mit Emma ein Interview geführt. Über „Ghost of the Light“ natürlich und den Entstehungsprozess, aber auch darüber, wie sie die Pandemie erlebt hat, über ihre Ansichten zum Thema Künstliche Intelligenz in der Schaffung von Kunst und noch so einige andere Dinge. Das englischsprachige Original findet Ihr direkt im Anschluss. Mein Dank gilt Emma für die investierte Zeit und ihrem Bruder Anthony, der quasi als Interview-Manager fungierte.

Roman Empire: Seit der Veröffentlichung von „Burn the Sky Down“ sind mehr als zehn Jahre vergangen, viel ist passiert in der Welt. Die erste und offensichtlichste Frage lautet daher an dieser Stelle: Warum hat es so viel Zeit gebraucht, ein neues Album fertigzustellen? Und (für diejenigen meiner Leser, die es nicht mitbekommen haben): Was hast Du in der Zwischenzeit so gemacht?

Emma Hewitt: Ja, es ist definitiv eine Weile her seit dem ersten Album! Es war gar nicht so sehr, dass ich mir sonderlich viel Zeit damit gelassen hätte, das zweite Album fertigzustellen, sondern eher, dass ich meine Songs als Kollaborationen verschiedenen Produzenten und DJs gegeben habe. Ich schrieb also eine Reihe von Songs, mit der Absicht, sie selbst aufzunehmen, aber wenn sich Kollaborationen ergaben, überließ ich diese Songs oft anderen und musste von vorne beginnen. Erst vor ein paar Jahren entschied ich, dass ich einige für mich behalten und sie auf die Art und Weise produzieren möchte, wie ich sie eigentlich wirklich hören wollte. Dieser Prozess hat ebenfalls einige Zeit in Anspruch genommen, da ich erst einmal herausfinden musste, wie ich alle Klänge erzeugen konnte, die ich in meinem Kopf hörte, anstatt mich auf eine externe Person zu verlassen. Jetzt, da es so etwas wie eine Vorlage gibt, wird es nicht mehr so lange dauern, bis die nächste EP erscheint!

Roman Empire: Wenn Du nicht für Dein Solo-Projekt singst und musizierst, bist Du oft bei Künstler*innen im Trance-Bereich zu hören. „Burn the Sky Down“ und jetzt auch „Ghost of the Light“ haben mit Trance aber gar nichts zu tun. Wie kommt es zu diesem Spagat, sowohl hier wie da musikalisch zu Hause zu sein? Sind Deine Gesangsbeiträge beispielsweise für Dash Berlin oder Cosmic Gate eine Flucht aus dem, was Du musikalisch sonst machst – oder ist es genau umgekehrt und Musik, wie sie auf Deinem neuen Album zu hören ist, ist die Abwechslung, die Du von den vielen Trance-Liedern brauchst?

Emma Hewitt: Interessante Frage! Tatsächlich war Trance-Musik für mich eine Nebensache. Wie ein Ort, den ich besuchen, aber nie wirklich darin leben wollte. Ich habe an organischen Musik- und Songwriting-Projekten gearbeitet, als ich mit Dash Berlin, Cosmic Gate und anderen DJs zusammengearbeitet habe. Ich mag den Musikstil, aber es nicht das, was ich höre oder was mich musikalisch inspiriert. Die Welt der Dance Music hat sich irgendwie seitdem weiterentwickelt und sie war sicherlich sehr gut zu mir, aber meine natürliche musikalische Heimat liegt im eher organischen Bereich. Ich liebe akustische, Folk- und Rockmusik, daher freue ich mich sehr, zu meinen wahren Wurzeln zurückgekehrt zu sein und dieses Album erschaffen zu haben.

Roman Empire: Wie kommt es eigentlich immer zu den jeweiligen Kollaborationen? Ruft beispielsweise ein Markus Schulz bei Dir an und sagt: hey Emma, ich habe hier ein Lied, möchtest du das einsingen? Oder wie darf ich mir das vorstellen?

Emma Hewitt: Manchmal schicken mir die DJs einen instrumentalen Track, zu dem ich arbeiten soll, und ich lasse mich davon inspirieren und schreibe eine Gesangsmelodie und Texte. Manchmal schreiben mein Bruder und ich einen Song mit einer Gitarre oder einem Klavier und schicken ihn an den Produzenten, der dann den Track um den Gesang herum erstellt. Sehr selten, wie kürzlich mit Markus und auch einmal mit Gareth Emery, schreiben wir einen Song aber auch von Grund auf gemeinsam im Studio.

Roman Empire: Zurück zu „Ghost of the Light“: Hat sich Deine Vorgehensweise bei der Erschaffung von Musik in der letzten Dekade geändert? Und wie sieht die überhaupt aus? Kannst Du ein bisschen was zu den Entstehungs- und Aufnahmeprozessen erzählen? Auch hier noch einmal der Bezug zur Pandemie: Von Kylie Minogue (aber nicht nur der) wissen wir, dass ihr Album „Disco“ mehr oder weniger zu Hause entstanden ist. Und theoretisch bräuchte man heute ja auch nicht mehr sooo zwingend gemeinsam im Studio zu hocken, um ein Album aufzunehmen. Erzähl mal, wie „Ghost of the Light“ entstanden ist.

Emma Hewitt: Oh ja, der Prozess hat sich sogar sehr verändert! In der Zeit von „Ghost of the Light“ schrieb ich Songs, die in einem organischen, aber dennoch elektronischen Stil produziert werden sollten. Aber damals dachte ich aus irgendeinem Grund immer noch, dass ich eine Art magischer Produzentenperson außerhalb von mir selbst finden musste, die alles zum Leben erwecken könnte. Es war nur immer schwierig, genau das zu finden, denn im Laufe der Jahre wurde mir klar, dass dies eine Art Fantasie war. Erst während der Pandemie, als wir alle gezwungen waren, zu Hause zu bleiben, erkannte ich schließlich … wenn ich möchte, dass sich etwas so anhört, wie es in meinem Kopf klingt, dann muss ich herausfinden, wie ich die Klänge aus meinem Kopf herausbekomme!

Und dann begann ein großer Lernprozess, bei dem mein Bruder, unser Freund Tim und ich einfach Töne erzeugten, bis wir genug Vibes hatten, um ein Album zu füllen. Wir wussten nicht genau, was dabei herauskommen würde, aber das war irgendwie auch die Schönheit dieses Prozesses.

Roman Empire: Täusche ich mich, oder ist „Ghost of the Light“ organischer als dessen Vorgänger? Die Drums zum Beispiel wirken auf mich druckvoller als ich sie in Erinnerung habe. Außerdem meine ich, vermehrt Gitarren zu hören. Und bei Songs wie „Children“ habe ich das Gefühl, dass aufgrund der flirrenden Synthies die 80er-Jahre Einzug gehalten haben.

Emma Hewitt: Ja, das vorherige Album hatte definitiv mehr elektronische Elemente. Mit „Ghost of the Light“ wollten wir super organisch sein. So wie die Bands, die uns in unserer Jugend inspiriert haben. Es gibt viele Live-Drums, Gitarren, analoge Synthesizer, Klavier usw. Wir hatten viel Spaß dabei, das Album im traditionellen Band-Sinne zu produzieren.

Roman Empire: Es sind teilweise sehr persönliche Geschichten, die Du auf Deinem Album erzählst, oder? Ich denke beispielsweise an „Raindrop“, in dem es um ein Mädchen geht, was Du vor langer Zeit kanntest und dann aus den Augen verloren hast. Ich fühlte mich an einen Freund erinnert, den ich ein halbes Leben lang kannte und dann ebenfalls aus den Augen verloren habe. Und so sehr ich es heute auch versuche, er ist nicht mehr ausfindig zu machen. Ich weiß also nicht einmal, ob dieser Freund noch lebt. Dieses Mädchen aus „Raindrop“ – hättest Du die Möglichkeit, diese Spur noch einmal aufzunehmen? Oder ist es das, was Du damit meinst, dass dieses Album auch dem gewidmet ist, was wir verloren haben?

Emma Hewitt: Ich glaube, in gewisser Weise gibt es einige Momente, die in der Vergangenheit bleiben sollen. Momente, in denen wir die Menschen in unseren Erinnerungen besuchen können, so wie sie einmal waren, und sie werden auf ewig für uns so bleiben. Ich weiß nicht, was aus diesen Erinnerungen wird, wenn wir die Menschen heute finden. Ich denke, sie verschwinden, und die Magie geht irgendwie verloren.

Roman Empire: Was inspiriert Dich? Sind es Stimmungen und Gefühle, die irgendwie rausmüssen? Oder Erinnerungen? Oder bestimmte Ereignisse?

Emma Hewitt: All das oben Genannte! Es gibt Augenblicke in der Zeit, Erinnerungen, die eine Stimmung oder ein Gefühl verkörpern, etwas, das wir hier in der Gegenwart nicht vollständig erreichen, aber auf das wir von Zeit zu Zeit einen Blick erhaschen können … diese vergangenen Momente inspirieren mich oft in meinem Schreiben, denn sie haben etwas fast Mystisches an sich. Es fühlt sich an, als würde man in eine parallele Realität oder einen Traum eintauchen.

Roman Empire: „This Isn’t Over“ und „Endless Sky“ sind im Vergleich zu anderen Songs des Albums sehr kurz ausgefallen, wirken beinahe wie Interludien oder Demos. Und gerade „This Isn’t Over“ wirkt beinahe unfertig auf mich, es fühlt sich an, als würde mittendrin der Ton abgedreht. Ich vermute, es ist Absicht, aber was ist die Intention dahinter?

Emma Hewitt: Ja, das war beabsichtigt. Diese Songs sollten nur kleine Zwischenspiele sein, wie eine Brücke zwischen den Erinnerungen. Ich habe darüber nachgedacht, sie länger zu machen, aber ich hatte das Gefühl, dass sie so bleiben wollten, wie sie entstanden sind. Genau in der Länge, die sie haben.

Roman Empire: Wenn Du nur einen bestimmten Song herauspicken dürftest, um das Album jemandem zu empfehlen, der noch nie etwas von Dir gehört hat – welcher wäre das?

Emma Hewitt: Oh, das ist schwer zu sagen, denn es hängt von meiner Stimmung ab. Meine Lieblingssongs sind jetzt die Schlusssongs geworden, wie „The River“ oder „Holding Out For You“. Aber für jemanden, der meine Musik noch nicht gehört hat, würde ich wahrscheinlich „Into My Arms“ sagen.

Roman Empire: „Burn the Sky Down“ wurde damals von einer Bonus-CD flankiert, auf welcher einige Songs des Albums unter anderem von Armin van Buuren usw. einen Trance-Remix spendiert bekamen. Ist etwas Derartiges für „Ghost of the Light“ auch geplant? Oder war das ein Anliegen des damaligen Labels Armada Music?

Emma Hewitt: Ja, wir haben Remixe für die meisten Songs, einige werden auch noch veröffentlicht. Wir werden auf jeden Fall später ein Remix-Album dieser Tracks herausbringen.

Roman Empire: Apropos Armada: Wie kommt es, dass „Ghost of the Light“ nicht auch bei Armada Music erschienen ist?

Emma Hewitt: Armada war großartig für das erste Album, aber Arny von Black Hole [Recordings] ist wirklich ein Musikliebhaber. Er glaubt an die Songs und hat die Vision vollständig verstanden, auch wenn die Musik nicht für die Clubs gemacht wurde. Black Hole ist ein sehr unterstützendes Label, und ich bin dankbar für die Unterstützung und Arnys Bereitschaft, mit diesem Album wirklich aus der Reihe zu tanzen!

Roman Empire: Eines der bestimmendsten Themen der letzten Jahre war zweifelsohne die Corona-Pandemie. Wie hast Du sie erlebt? Mit welchen Einschränkungen usw. hattest Du zu kämpfen? Bei uns in Deutschland reichte die Palette von Ausgangssperren und Kontaktbeschränkungen bis hin zur Einführung von Impfpflicht für bestimmte Personengruppen. Bei uns hatte besonders die Kunst- und Kulturbranche unter den Einschränkungen zu leiden. So wie ich es mitbekommen habe, bekamen hier viele Künstler*innen kaum oder nur unzureichend Unterstützung vom Staat, so manch kleinerer Club hat den Betrieb eingestellt, so manches Konzert oder Festival wurde ersatzlos gestrichen. Wie war das in Deinem Teil der Welt? Kam es vielleicht auch zu persönlichen Verwerfungen mit Bekannten wegen der von der Regierung beschlossenen Maßnahmen?

Emma Hewitt: Es tut mir leid zu hören, dass es in Deutschland zu dieser Zeit so streng und schwierig war. Es war definitiv eine traurige Situation für die Musik- und Kunstgemeinschaft weltweit. Ich denke, es dauert noch einige Zeit, bis sich die Musikwelt erholt hat.

Ja, auch in Australien war es sehr streng. Ich war nur für eine Woche dort zu Besuch, aber die Grenzen wurden geschlossen und ich saß mit meiner Familie 10 Monate dort fest. Die Regeln waren unglaublich streng, man durfte das Haus nicht verlassen, alles außer dem Nötigsten war geschlossen.

Ich war eigentlich aber dankbar, diese enge Zeit mit meiner Familie während der Lockdowns zu haben. Das gab mir die Möglichkeit, dieses Album mit meinem Bruder aufzunehmen. Ohne die Situation, wie sie war, hätten wir wahrscheinlich nicht so viel selbst ausprobiert, und ich bin dankbar, dass wir es getan haben. Für mich wurde die schwierige Situation am Ende positiv. Ich weiß, dass es für viele leider nicht so war, also nehme ich das nicht als selbstverständlich hin.

Roman Empire: Sprechen wir einmal kurz über das Thema KI. ChatPT und ähnliches ist derzeit in aller Munde. Kürzlich habe ich gelesen, dass die Sängerin Grimes ihre Stimme digitalisiert und für die Verwendung durch AI freigegeben hätte und nun über die Resultate staunt. Peter Gabriel sieht in der KI ein Werkzeug, das man lieber nutzen als verfluchen sollte, Nick Cave hingegen hält das alles für Bullshit, weil es nur seelenlosen Müll produziere. Wie ist Deine Meinung zu dem Thema? Wäre der Weg, den Grimes eingeschlagen hat, auch für Dich vorstellbar?

Emma Hewitt: Ich stimme Nick Cave in dem Sinne zu, dass Musik eine Seele haben sollte, sie muss irgendeine Art von Bedeutung und menschlicher Verbindung haben. KI kann schöne Klänge erzeugen und dafür gibt es sicherlich auch einen Platz. Es wird gut für viele EDM- und vielleicht auch einige Popsongs funktionieren, es wird sicherlich auch coole Experimente geben. Aber ich glaube, es wird immer noch eine Trennung geben.

Ich denke, KI ist ein fantastisches Werkzeug, das weise verwendet werden sollte, und zwar von jenen, die es auf einzigartige Weise anwenden können. Von denen, welche die richtigen Fragen stellen und es als Werkzeug verwenden können, um vielleicht bei der Inspiration Unterstützung zu bekommen. Aber ich glaube nicht, dass der kreative Prozess vollständig an KI übergeben werden sollte. Das wäre einfach faul und sinnlos.

Roman Empire: Was ist eigentlich aus der Band Missing Hours geworden, die Du meines Wissens nach vor langer Zeit mit Deinem Bruder Anthony gegründet hast. Meinst Du, da kommt noch was?

Emma Hewitt: Tatsächlich ist das Album „Ghost Of The Light“ in gewisser Weise eine Wiederbelebung von Missing Hours unter einem anderen Namen. Anthony (mein Bruder), unser Freund Tim Henwood, der auch Gitarrist bei Missing Hours war, und ich haben dieses Album zusammen kreiert. Es ist im Grunde genommen eine Weiterentwicklung von Missing Hours, mit einer etwas entspannteren Atmosphäre.

Roman Empire: Wer Deinen Aktivitäten bei Instagram & Co. folgt, sieht Dich Konzerte spielen an einigen der tollsten Orte der Welt. Was war bisher Dein schönstes Konzerterlebnis?

Emma Hewitt: Es ist definitiv schwer, eins auszuwählen, aber ich denke, einige der denkwürdigsten waren ein Silvesterkonzert in Vietnam mit Hunderttausenden von Menschen auf den Straßen, als meine Eltern auch aus Australien angereist sind, um dabei zu sein. Ich hatte auch viel Spaß auf einigen der Insomniac-Festivals in den USA oder dem Untold-Festival in Rumänien. Aber ich habe (fast) bei jedem Konzert Spaß, sie sind alle auf ihre Weise etwas Besonderes für mich.

Roman Empire: Zum Thema Konzerte muss ich diese Frage einfach stellen: Besteht auch nur der Hauch einer Chance, dass wir Dich auch in Deutschland mal auf Tour erleben dürfen?

Emma Hewitt: Ich hoffe wirklich sehr! Es ist schon eine Weile her, dass ich dort auftreten durfte! Daumen sind gedrückt, dass sich in Zukunft etwas ergibt.

Roman Empire: Ich überlasse immer die letzten Worte meinen InterviewpartnerInnen. Gibt es abschließend noch etwas, das Du meinen Lesern mitteilen möchtest?

Emma Hewitt: Vielen Dank, dass Du Dir die Zeit genommen hast, mit mir zu sprechen! Oh, ich möchte einfach ein riesiges Dankeschön an alle sagen, die auf irgendeine Weise eine Verbindung zu meiner Musik hergestellt haben. Das bedeutet mir die Welt!

It’s not so long ago that I was able to introduce you to Emma Hewitt’s very, very wonderful album „Ghost of the Light“ (even weeks after its release). After more than ten years, in which the artist has certainly not been idle, it was nevertheless only the second album that has sprung from her creative spirit. Since I think that far too few people (especially in our latitudes) still know Emma’s music – and also because I was simply curious, I readily admit – I conducted an interview with Emma. About „Ghost of the Light“ of course and its creation process, but also about how she experienced the pandemic, about her views on Artificial Intelligence in the creation of art and some other things. My thanks go to Emma for the time she invested and to her brother Anthony, who acted as the interview manager.

Roman Empire: Since the release of „Burn the Sky Down,“ more than ten years have passed, and a lot has happened in the world. The first and most obvious question at this point is: Why did it take so long to complete a new album? And (for those of my readers who may not be aware): What have you been doing in the meantime?
 
Emma Hewitt: Yes, it has been a while since the first album, for sure! It wasn’t so much that I was spending time completing the second album, it was more that I kept giving my songs away as collaborations to different producers and DJs.  So, I would write a bunch of songs, intending to record them myself, but then when collaborations popped up I would often hand those songs over to others and have to start again.  It was only when, a few years ago, I decided I needed to keep some for myself and create them in a way I really wanted to hear them produced.  Then this process did take some time, as I then had to figure out how to create all of the sounds I was hearing inside my head, instead of relying on an outside person to do this.  Now that there is a kind of template, it won’t be so long before the next EP!
 
Roman Empire: When you’re not singing and making music for your solo project, you can often be heard collaborating with artists in the trance genre. However, „Burn the Sky Down“ and now „Ghost of the Light“ have nothing to do with trance. How do you manage to be musically at home in both places? Are your vocal contributions, for example, to Dash Berlin or Cosmic Gate, an escape from what you typically do musically? Or is it the other way around, and the music on your new album provides the variety you need from the many trance songs?
 
Emma Hewitt: Interesting question!  Actually, trance music was a side thing for me, a place I intended to visit but never live.  I was working on organic music and songwriting projects when I collaborated with Dash Berlin, Cosmic Gate and other DJs.  I like the style of music, but for me, it wasn’t what I listened to or had been inspired by musically.  The world of dance music kind of kept persisting after that, and it has been super good to me for sure, but my natural musical home is in the more organic territory.  I love acoustic, folk and rock music, so I am super happy to return to my true origins in creating this album. 
 
Roman Empire: How do these collaborations actually come about? Does someone like Markus Schulz call you and say, „Hey Emma, I have a song here, would you like to sing it?“ Or how should I imagine it?
 
Emma Hewitt: Sometimes the DJs will send me an instrumental track to work to and I will bounce of that and write a vocal melody and lyrics, vibing off what they have sent.  Other times, my brother and I will write a song with a guitar or a piano and send it to the producer and they create the track around the vocals.  Very occasionally, like with Markus recently and once with Gareth Emery, we will write the song together from scratch in the studio.

 Roman Empire: Let’s go back to „Ghost of the Light“: Has your approach to creating music changed in the last decade? And what does it look like? Can you tell us a bit about the creative and the recording processes? Here is a reference to the pandemic: We know from Kylie Minogue (and not just her) that her album „Disco“ was mostly created at home. And theoretically, today, you don’t necessarily have to sit together in the studio to record an album. So, please tell us how „Ghost of the Light“ came to be.

Emma Hewitt: Oh yes, the process has changed so much!  In the time of „Ghost of the Light“, I was writing songs that were aimed to be produced in a more organic, yet still electronica style, but in those days I still, for some reason, felt like I needed to find that magical producer person outside of myself who could somehow bring everything to life. It was always so difficult to find this, as over the years I realized that was kind of a fantasy.  It was only during the pandemic, where we were all forced to stay home, that I realized finally…. if I want something to sound how it does inside my head, then I have to figure out how to get the sounds out of there myself!

And then came a huge learning process, where my brother, our friend Tim and me just started playing sounds until we found enough vibes to fill an album. We didn’t much know what we were going to end up with, but that was kind of the beauty in the process.
 
Roman Empire: Am I mistaken, or is „Ghost of the Light“ more organic than its predecessor? For example, the drums feel more powerful to me than I remember. Also, I believe I hear more guitars. And in songs like „Children“, I feel like the shimmering synths bring the ’80s vibe.
 
Emma Hewitt: Yes, for sure, the previous album was made with a lot more electronic elements.  With „Ghost of the Light“, we wanted to go super organic, like the bands that inspired us growing up, there’s a lot of live drums, guitars, analog synths and piano etc.  We had a lot of fun producing this in the more traditional band sense.
 
Roman Empire: Some of the songs on your album tell very personal stories, don’t they? I’m thinking, for example, of „Raindrop“, which is about a girl you knew a long time ago and then lost touch with. It reminded me of a friend whom I knew for half my life and also lost contact with. And as much as I try today, I can’t find him anymore. So, I don’t even know if this friend is still alive. This girl from „Raindrop“ – would you have the possibility to follow a trace in this case? Or is that what you mean by this album also being dedicated to what we lost?
 
Emma Hewitt: I believe in a way there are almost some moments that are meant to be left in the past, where we can visit the people in our memories, as they once were, and they will always stay that way to us. I don’t know what becomes of those memories when we find the people today, I think they vanish, and the magic is somehow lost.
 
Roman Empire: What inspires you? Are they moods and emotions that need to be expressed somehow? Or memories? Or specific events?
 
Emma Hewitt: All of the above! There are snapshots in time, memories that encapsulate a mood, a feeling, something that we can’t quite reach again fully here in the present, but we can catch a glimpse of from time to time…so often these past moments inspire me in my writing, because there is something almost mystical about them, it feels like diving into a parallel reality or a dream.
 
Roman Empire: Compared to other songs on the album, „This Isn’t Over“ and „Endless Sky“ are quite short, almost like interludes or demos. Especially „This Isn’t Over“ feels unfinished to me, as if the sound cuts off in the middle. I suspect it’s intentional, but what is the intention behind it?

Roman Empire: „Burn the Sky Down“ was accompanied by a bonus CD back then, featuring trance remixes of some of the album’s songs by artists like Armin van Buuren, among others. Is something similar planned for „Ghost of the Light“? Or was that a concern of the previous label, Armada Music?
 
Emma Hewitt: Yes, we have remixes on most of the songs, some still to be released.  We will definitely release a remix album of these tracks later on.

Roman Empire: Speaking of Armada: How come „Ghost of the Light“ wasn’t released on Armada Music as well?
 
Emma Hewitt: Armada were great for the first album, but Arny from Black Hole [Recordings] is really such a music loving guy, he believes in the songs and understood the vision completely, even when the music was not made for the clubs.  Black Hole is a super supportive label, and I am grateful for the support and Arny’s willingness to really step outside the box with this album!

Roman Empire: One of the most defining topics in recent years was undoubtedly the COVID-19 pandemic. How did you experience it? What restrictions and challenges did you have to face? In Germany, the range of measures extended from curfews and contact limitations to the introduction of vaccination mandates for certain groups of people. The arts and culture sector, in particular, suffered greatly. As far as I am aware, many artists here received little or inadequate support from the government, and several smaller clubs had to close down, with concerts and festivals being canceled without replacement. How was it in your part of the world? Did it perhaps lead to personal conflicts with acquaintances due to the government-imposed measures?
 
Emma Hewitt: I am sorry to hear things were so strict and difficult in Germany during this time.  It was definitely a sad situation for the music and arts community worldwide, I think it is taking some time for the music world to recover still.
 
Yes, it was very strict in Australia too.  I was just visiting Australia for a week, but the borders closed, and I ended up there with my family for 10 months.  The rules were incredibly strict, you couldn’t leave home, everything was closed other than essentials.
 
I was actually grateful to have this close time with my family though and the lockdowns gave me the opportunity to create this album with my brother. Without the situation being as it was, we probably wouldn’t have tried to do so much ourselves, and I am grateful we did.  So for me, in the end, the difficult situation became positive. I know for many it sadly did not, so I don’t take that for granted.

Roman Empire: Let’s briefly talk about the topic of AI. Chatbots and similar technologies are currently on everyone’s lips. I recently read that the singer Grimes had digitized her voice and made it available for use by AI, and she is now amazed by the results. Peter Gabriel sees AI as a tool that should be embraced rather than cursed, while Nick Cave considers it all bullshit because it only produces soulless junk. What is your perspective on this? Could you imagine taking the path that Grimes has taken?
 
Emma Hewitt: I agree with Nick Cave in the sense that music should have a soul, it needs to have some kind of meaning and human connection behind it.  AI will create pretty sounds, and there is always a place for this too, for sure this will work well for a lot of EDM and some pop music perhaps, there will be some cool experimentation that will be done for sure, but I believe there will be a disconnect still.
 
I think AI is a fantastic tool to be used wisely, by those who can instruct it in a unique way, ask the right questions of it and use it as a tool to perhaps assist with inspiration.  But I don’t believe the creative process should be entirely handed to AI, that will be just lazy and meaningless.

Roman Empire: By the way, what happened to the band Missing Hours that you, as far as I know, founded with your brother Anthony a long time ago? Do you think there is still something to come?
 
Emma Hewitt: Actually, the „Ghost Of The Light” album is, in a way, a resurgence of Missing Hours, under another name. Anthony (my brother), our friend Tim Henwood, who was also guitarist in Missing Hours, and myself created this album together, so it is pretty much an evolution of Missing Hours, with a little more of a chill vibe.
 
Roman Empire: For those who follow your activities on Instagram & Co., they see you playing concerts in some of the most amazing places in the world. What has been your most beautiful concert experience so far?
 
Emma Hewitt: It is definitely hard to pick one, but I think some of the most memorable have been a NYE show in Vietnam, with hundreds of thousands of people in the streets, when my parents also flew over from Australia to be there.  I have also had a lot of fun at some of the Insomniac Festivals in the USA, or Untold festival in Romania.  But I really have fun at (almost) every show, they are all special in some way to me.
 
Roman Empire: Regarding concerts, I just have to ask this question: Is there even a slight chance that we might get to see you on tour in Germany?
 
Emma Hewitt: I really hope so! It has been a while since I got to perform out there!  Fingers crossed something comes up in the future.
