The original Commercial Historic District of the City of Albert Lea consisted of three square blocks…
The picturesque village of Albert Lea was platted in 1856. It wasn’t until 1868, however, when the Southern Minnesota Railroad built a line through town, that the community’s development accelerated. Albert Lea became a major railway juncture for southern Minnesota, leading to construction of a depot for the Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad at 606 South Broadway (also in 1868). A modern station replaced the original in 1914. The second structure supported rail networks connecting East...

A Diplomat’s Perspective on Artificial Intelligence (AI)
A Moment in U.S. Diplomatic History Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developing and advancing right before our very eyes. It has aggressively integrated into our society as it contributes heavily to a plethora of fields such as medical, legal, military, and government. Although AI is used universally as a resource and tool, it is less certain how advanced and dependable it will become. Likewise, society is still determining the implications it will have on the global dynamic. Diplomatic figure...

Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) Committee on Enforced Disappearances has made a disturbing claim. According to Colombia One, over 20,000 unidentified bodies are allegedly stored in hangars at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá. Following its visit to Colombia, the UN Committee released a report highlighting tens of thousands of missing persons across the country.
"Colombia is faced with thousands of unidentified bodies—underground, in storage facilities, and in what are referred to as pools," stated the UN Committee's report.
Among the most striking findings was the alleged presence of bodies near the infrastructure of Bogotá’s airport, the largest in Colombia. "According to information provided to the delegation, there are also around 20,000 unidentified bodies in hangars at Bogotá Airport," the UN reported.
Opain Denies Allegations
Opain, the Colombian private company operating the airport, responded to the UN's claims, stating they were unaware of the reported information.
"Regarding the news reported in some media about the alleged presence of hangars containing thousands of bodies, Opain, the concessionaire of El Dorado International Airport, informs the public that it is unaware of such facts," the company stated.
Raising Awareness and Recommendations
The UN delegation emphasized that the purpose of these disclosures is to increase Colombian authorities' awareness of the issue.
“These are not newly discovered bodies. These are bodies stored in hangars. There is no space to continue preserving the corpses or remains that have been found. Therefore, our very specific recommendation is that it is crucial to provide the necessary infrastructure, human resources, and financial resources to build proper storage facilities,” said a delegation member.
Calls for Investigation
The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances called on Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) to investigate the case.
“The delegation is particularly concerned about the condition of institutions responsible for identifying the bodies and remains found. The available material and human resources are insufficient to respond to the demand,” the UN delegation added.
Forced disappearances are one of the most painful realities stemming from Colombia's armed conflict. According to the UN report, between 98,000 and 200,000 people are missing in Colombia. This staggering figure is challenging to calculate due to the lack of reliable records. Current estimates put the number of missing persons at 124,734.
Colombian Government Response
Javier Sarmiento, Colombia’s Deputy Attorney General for Human Rights, announced that the Attorney General’s Office would investigate the matter.
"The Attorney General has ordered an immediate request for information from the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences to confirm or deny this information, as the Committee cited them as the source. Additionally, an immediate visit will be conducted at El Dorado Airport," he said.
The Colombian government denied the UN's findings. After searching 27 hangars at El Dorado Airport, no bod
ies were found stored there.
