Web3 has a marshmallow problem | #5
Web3 has a marshmallow problem. In the 1970s Stanford conducted a well known experiment that tested the correlation of delayed gratification with long term success. In brief, a set of children were put in a room alone with a marshmallow. They were told that if they didn’t eat the marshmallow before the adult returned they would get two marshmallows. Majority of the kids stuffed themselves. However, the minority that waited for the adult to return were better able to deal with frustration and ...

Designing web3 for wonder | #1
Have you ever been curious, neigh - wondered, why the word ‘wonder’ is used so frequently in the web3 space? WonderFi Wonderland Protocol Wonderverse The Alice in Wonderland theme seems to be a strong metaphor for web3. But what does that mean? That we’re all just Alice on an uncontrollable rollercoaster ride of bunnies, mushrooms and morally ambiguous characters? I hope not. I mean, if we truly want to share the magic of web3 with the rest of the world - replying to the emotions that come wi...

Right Actions = Appropriate Context | #51
This anecdote is often overlooked, yet vital in web3 communities. The acts of observing, contributing and participating are fundamentally separate acts with different desired outcomes. If we don’t create the appropriate context for these acts to be performed, the fundamental structure we build the community and culture on will be unaligned. Unaligned foundations never stood the test of time. This unalignment happens because if we do not present a desired action to a human within a context tha...

These three questions posed by Seth Godin have the power to drastically simplify our journeys as a DAO operators.
Who’s it for?
What’s it for?
How do we know it’s working?
Now, we can answer them in an easy way that wont get us very far. For instance:
Who’s it for: everybody.
What’s it for: saving the earth together.
How do we know it’s working: the earth gets saved 100 years from now.
These answers don’t work because they are broad and they are broad because we’re hedging.
If its for everyone, there isn’t a ‘someone’ for us to disappoint. No one would argue with saving the earth, and so we don’t get noticed. There is no way to measure if the earth got saved or not, especially in 100 years.
And so we’re safely stuck, hiding from what we are truly capable of.
Or, we can answer them in a way that creates forward motion towards change:
Who’s it for: current Blue Economy environmental activists who are present in web3.
What’s it for: developing and activating a movement around empowering small island developing states to use web3 in order to build regenerative businesses.
How do we know it’s working: We have buy in from the top 3 investment banks and accelerators in the region in the next year, and 2 running regenerative web3 business models in 5 years.
These answers are scary because it puts us on the hook. With such clarity, we can almost taste failure. However, they also put us on the right track to develop strategies and tactics that will empowers us to create the change we seek to make.
If we are serious about creating meaningful change, we will take these questions seriously.
