Everyone is trying to speculate and guess what is going to make crypto gaming blow up. Is it Epic Games coming to crypto? Is it NFT’s? Play to earn?
I’ve started to believe big adoption will come from reality becoming gamified and not games coming to reality. I am proposing that Metaverse x Gaming is the next level, not games coming to the blockchain.

Traditional gaming being converted to blockchain is simply not enough to bring adoption.
Just the other day, I was looking at a gaming project a friend mentioned. It was a MMORPG, my favorite genre. After a bit of digging it seems it’s an existing game being brought on the blockchain.
I surprised myself thinking that I would just rather play the classic one, even as a crypto gaming proponent. Why?
In the classic one I already know the process of getting in. I probably have to download the game, create an account and boom I’m in. If I want to dish out some cash to flex on plebs, all I need is 1 min to fill in my credit card info.

In the crypto version, there are a few extra steps.
I will probably have to move some crypto around, buy a token that will keep fluctuating in value, create a new wallet which I will use to buy in-game assets that are probably way more expensive than in the non-crypto version.
It’s a simple equation in my mind and in the mind of the average gamer. The negatives of getting into a crypto game outweigh the positives.
Too many complexities and unknowns, security risks for a very similar experience to traditional gaming.
As humans, we will always prefer the tried and tested and avoid the risk of the unknown. I once read in a marketing book that for someone to replace a product that is currently being used, the new product has to be perceived as way better. The same or marginally better is not enough to create a change in behavior.
This is why making traditional gaming slightly better through crypto will not bring people in. We need disruption. We need innovation.
That’s what I think the Metaverse can bring to gaming. A completely new paradigm.
The metaverse is a very new narrative in the world’s consciousness and it will only continue to expand as we become more and more digitalized. It proposes to revolutionize the way we go about our daily lives.
The signs are already there. Big players are already pouring money into this. Look at the big power move Zuckerberg pulled renaming Facebook to Meta, pushing his vision of people working in a virtual office, dressed as penguins.

We will be able to attend concerts, engage in social experiences, have unique skins to flex, exchange value, all in a virtual world.
Fortunately, in its current form the metaverse is perceived to be closely tied to crypto and gaming. We saw this with all the hype around Sandbox and Decentraland, and virtual land sales in general.

Gaming will come to crypto thanks to innovation, ownership, interoperability, not because it’s slightly better. And that’s what I think the metaverse can bring to the table. Completely transform the gaming space and bring mass adoption.
