But as we rush forward, it’s worth asking: What kind of system are we actually building?

In traditional commerce, your transactions are private by default. Your tipping habits don’t follow you from app to app. Your purchase history isn’t searchable by anyone with a browser.

On-chain, all of that changes.

☁️ Commerce Without Privacy?

Public blockchains were designed for transparency and auditability—not global retail.

Now, as commerce moves on-chain, we’re shifting the checkout layer of the internet onto infrastructure where everyone can see everything: your wallet, your network, your purchases.

That’s not how modern economies function. That’s how surveillance architectures emerge. And this time, no state actor is required. Marketers, competitors—even random bots—can extract and exploit this data.

Visibility vs. Safety

Some say this is the price of decentralization. But that’s a false trade-off.

We have the tools to build privacy-preserving systems—ones that still allow auditability and programmability—if we prioritize them now. Otherwise, the system will harden around assumptions that were never meant for billions of people transacting, voting, and coordinating in public.

This isn’t privacy maximalism. It’s resilience.

If users self-censor, if businesses stay off-chain, if reputational risk outweighs network effects—we undermine the promise of decentralization itself.

The right question isn’t whether privacy will protect bad actors. It’s how we ensure that good actors aren’t exposed by default.

🧠 Looking Ahead

Stablecoins on Shopify is a milestone. But milestones shape the road ahead.

We should be asking—before defaults get locked in:

• What visibility norms are we encoding into infrastructure?

• What behavior are we incentivizing—or chilling?

• Who benefits from default transparency? Who bears the cost?

These are design choices, not theoretical debates.

🔐 Privacy Is the Next Layer

The opportunity is clear: Build privacy and consent into the core. Not as an afterthought. Not as a feature. As infrastructure.

Because if we don’t, the freedom to transact becomes the freedom to be watched.

And that’s not progress. That’s exposure.
