Based: I Need a Dev!
In August I minted Based. “A token for the early adopters.” Open for the whole month, it closed just shy of 46.5K tokens minted and over 33k unique wallets. The most resonant piece in my young onchain discography by many multiples. Immediately I felt understanding emerge in regard to Jack Butcher’s words about his Checks and Opepen projects. Retrofitted for this post, he spoke of the impetus to experiment with each collection (initially just single-piece open editions) coming after seeing the...

The practice of writing is a practice of thinking. For the last few years I have been operating by an internal mantra:
Sunday is Monday
As a reformed piece of shit I had many patterns I had to rewrite on top of - apathy being one of the main ones. It is in a concerted effort that I decided Sunday was the start of my new week and that I had no reason to wait for Monday.
Today I feel my mind trying to digest some concepts and the keyboard is my shitter.
You do enough drugs, you’ll end up in the underbelly of culture. You spend enough time there, and you get a feel for what it means to be counter culture. It seeps into you and it’s not all bad truthfully.
Crypto is fundamentally counter culture; the theory and the practicing theologians of it. But the token culture (NFTs) I’m not so convinced these days. I see many ‘movements’ and schizo posters adorning the badge of counter regime, but it seems even digital blocks can’t avoid gentrification.

What is ‘the culture’ when looked at as “an aggregate of us” - unknown?
Who are us? What does the ven diagram even look like at scale?
Why is counter valuable outside of the identity signifiers?
Is adoption even the real goal?
A lot of art purists with big opinions and big social followings are mistaking engagement with effective thinking. The subtext, to me, reads as well intentioned messaging but very shitty prizes if followed through with at scale.
Without making this a demographic based accusation I’ll just illustrate the pattern I see developing.
individual starts in the market
individual ascends in the market
individual gets amnesia about the ascension process &/o has resentments they wish to see rectified
individual provides misguided comms about alternative ascension pathways for w/e reasons
new individuals affirm, adhere to, & amplify step 4’s comms in an attempt to ascend alternatively - with 1-10% successfully doing so
more competitive individuals come in and close up shop after ascending high enough - ostracizing the remaining 90-99%
What is the obsession with making art commerce pejorative?
Do artists and creators deserve to figure out wealth like entertainers?
Why is art simultaneously the most valuable and least ‘valued’ commodity?
Besides being lazy &/o ignorant (definitionally not pejoratively) why do artists rebel against financial sovereignty?
