Integrated into a set of three batteries located south of Praia do Guincho – the Bateria da Galé, the Bateria Alta and the Bateria da Crismina – it was designed and built in 1762, under the direction of the Count of Lippe, reformer of the Portuguese army, when Portugal's entry into the Seven Years' War.

These batteries, very similar planimetrically, had an angular body, with a parapet and a platform, behind which the magazine and the space for the barracks would be built and sought to compensate for the deficiencies in the defense of this part of the coast, in the face of the danger of a Franco-Spanish attack.
The choice of sites for its construction followed a strategic plan.
In this way, the Battery of Galé, erected on a rocky point, aimed to prevent, with the support of Fort Guincho, the enemy landing on the extensive beach that separated the two fortifications.
At the same time, in joint fire with the Alta Battery, it would defend the nearby cove. The Alta and Crismina batteries also protected the beach they delimited.
Although during the Liberal Wars, D. Miguel ordered that the Alta Battery be repaired and supplied with new artillery pieces and the respective garrison, this later came to be deactivated and practically destroyed in 1959, when it was transformed into the Hotel do Guincho.
