The Ponta Garça lighthouse came into operation on May 28, 1957. It is located on the south coast of S. Miguel, about 14 miles east of Ponta Delgada. The tower is 14 meters high and 101 meters high. It was equipped with a fixed dioptric device, in drum, of 3rd order, large model (500 mm focal length), having as light source the acetylene gas incandescence with sleeve changer.

The light is eclipsed, there is a white and a red sector, the latter covering the islet of Vila Franca do Campo.
The luminous range is 16 miles for white light and 13 miles for red light.
It was connected in 1957 to the public water supply network.
In 1980 it was electrified with energy from the public grid and an “EDOLD” eclipser with a 220V 250W lamp was installed.
The “EDOLD” system was replaced by the “SIRIUS” in January 1987, operating with a 50W 12V lamp. The gas glow, which until then served as a backup system, was removed.
Due to several problems that arose in the SIRIUS eclipse, in 1988 it was equipped with the APCL-10 system, operating with a 100W 12V lamp.
On May 20, 2009, a Cisco ASA 5510 Firewall, an eight-port Cisco Catalyst 3560 Switch and a Cisco SIP Phone 3911 were installed (VPN), making access to the Marine Communication Network available.
