The Charter of the General Board of Finance of February 1, 1758, included it among the six lighthouses that it had built: Berlengas, N.S. da Guia, Fortress of S. Lourenço (Bugio), S. Julião da Barra, Porto bar and Viana coast.

The truth, however, is that neither the Montedor lighthouse nor others would come to fruition under this charter.
The definitive realization of the projected lighthouse only began to acquire clear contours within a commission designated by ordinance of 1902, the designer being the engineer José Ribeiro de Almeida.
Finished in 1908 and budgeted at twenty-two contos de reis for the building project, the work was completed in 1910, the date on which the lighthouse began to function, as stated in Notice to Mariners No. 1910, for testing.

With a tower 28 meters high, attached building and at an altitude of 103 meters above mean sea level, a 3rd order Fresnel lenticular apparatus was installed, producing groups of three white lightning flashes every 10 seconds. The illuminating device was a lamp with a constant level of 4 twists, running on oil. In 1926 the group of 3 lightning bolts was reduced to 2, so as not to be confused with the Leça lighthouse.
Over time, it was modernized, mainly in terms of energy and light source, working since 1936 with incandescence by oil vapor, to be connected to the public distribution grid in 1947.

Subsequently, several transformations were made, allowing this lighthouse to have increasingly modern equipment. In 1987 it ended up being automated, partially reducing human intervention.
