Built in 1645, this fort sought to overcome the defense difficulties on the western side of Carcavelos Beach, crossing fire with the Fort of S. Julião da Barra.

In 1762, its strategic importance was recognized, when it was equipped with more artillery and reconfigured. With the Napoleonic wars, namely the invasion of 1810, led by Massena, the English army, occupying Portugal, commanded by Wellesley, built the Lines Defenses of the Lisbon Peninsula, better known as Linhas de Torres Vedras.
The third line connected Paço de Arcos to Forte do Junqueiro, guaranteeing the safe embarkation of British troops at Praia do Portinho (Praia da Torre) in the event of defeat in the Torres Vedras area.
Four wooden jetties were built on this beach for boarding. In 1897, following the loss of its military status, it was transferred to Councilor Tomás Ribeiro and doctor António José de Almeida to set up a maritime sanatorium for poor children, who It was inaugurated in 1902, in favor of the dissemination of hygienic principles and maritime therapies in the treatment and combat of bone and skin tuberculosis, lymphatic disease and weaknesses such as rickets.
The evolution of medicine and the dissemination of more effective drugs to combat tuberculosis would later lead to its transformation into an orthopedic hospital.
In 2010, its activity ceased, with the inauguration of the new Cascais Hospital, in Alcabideche, which was named Hospital Dr. José de Almeida.
