The Fort of São Brás de Sanxete is located in Cabo Raso, parish and municipality of Cascais, district of Lisbon, in Portugal.
History
This small maritime fort was built to watch over that part of the coast. It was crossing fire with the Fort of Crismina, in defense of Guincho beach, a vast stretch of sand where enemy vessels could easily land troops.
In 1894, losing its defensive function, it started to house a lighthouse, in operation until the present day.
This property, in the area of influence of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, is in the classification study phase, awaiting the Portuguese Institute of Architectural Heritage (IPPAR) for instructions from the Cascais City Council.
Currently, the fort's premises house the Cabo Raso Lighthouse, and its service premises are used as the Lighthouse Keeper's House. The current red-painted iron tower, adjacent to the Casa do Faroleiro, dates from 1915.
