This property classified as a Monument of Public Interest, also known as Forte do Abano, was built in 1642, when the Barra do Tagus defense system was reformulated.

With a quadrangular plan, it was intended to prevent possible landings on the extensive sand of Praia do Guincho, as well as in the entire Praia do Abano cove, also functioning as a watchtower with visual communication to Forte da Roca, to the north; and the fort of S. Brás de Sanxete, to the south, in Cabo Raso.
At the end of the 19th century, its structure was changed due to the possible collapse of the rocky platform. After its deactivation, the history of Forte do Guincho was marked by periods of abandonment and transfer to private individuals for leisure purposes.
In 2016, the State put this property up for concession to private parties for a period of 30 to 50 years. 9 At Praia do Guincho, a dune group begins that is part of the Guincho/Oitavos wind corridor.
This dune system persists due to the particularity of the wind regime and the availability of sand on the beaches of Guincho and Crismina, which is transported over the rocky platform of Cabo Raso, returning to the sea further south, between Oitavos and Guia.
It is an active, semi-open and extremely unstable system due to the constant mobilization of sandy particles associated with wind transport directed from north-northwest to south-southeast.
