Life and work
Garcia de Resende (1470-1536) was born in Évora. He soon revealed himself gifted with lyrics, having been the author of compositions in verse and prose and the compiler of the Cancioneiro Geral.
As was typical of his time, he developed several aspects, including drawing, poetry and music, and was a popular entertainer at palace evenings.
His name was forever associated with the compilation of the Cancioneiro Geral, which constitutes a matrix of the memories of more than 200 poets.
Sculptural Reading
Sculpture
Admittedly figurative piece, in the tradition of statuary, but with a formal language of marked contemporaneity.
Built by two elements, we seek a composition that identifies the poet's personality, balanced with the space in which it is integrated, seeking to merge the limited area of the “leaf” with the area that surrounds it.
The main element is the figure of Garcia Resende with a highly synthetic treatment that sufficiently defines what is known about the character and the clothing of the time.
The second element, the “desk” is the work table where all your “talents” symbolically intersect.
The set will be installed near the end of a platform that, rising in the “leaf” space designated for it, heads towards the surrounding green area and dives into it.
This platform contains a grass “walkway” along its entire length, which symbolizes the journey of a life lived at court.
The sculpture is made of pink granite and the platform will have a box along its entire length that will allow grass to be sown.
Poetic Reading
A Renaissance man with a career that spans three reigns, always remaining at the service and close to the kings. Cheerful, friendly, certainly competent, he managed, with these qualities, to remain in important roles at Court for a long time. It can be seen from the references found that it has a bulky figure. Gil Vicente refers to his roundness and “monkfish face”.
Sculptor
Antonio Vidiga
