Ordered to be built on the initiative of the banker Cândido Sotto Mayor to serve as his residence in Avenidas Novas, the palace was built between 1902 and 1906, forming part of a winding garden and comprising some annexes, which formerly functioned as stables, servants' house and washing place.
Description
The project was signed by the Army Engineering Captain António Rodrigues Nogueira, but the initial design was in charge of Arch. Ezequiel Bandeira, with the collaboration of Arch. Carlos Alberto Correia Monção. The architectural program of the property, in ''composite style'', refers to a French inspiration, highlighting the two entrance facades and the window with caryatids, by the sculptor Jorge Neto. The interior is organized around a large square central hall, illuminated by an immense skylight.

Approved as a Property of Public Interest, the Sotto Mayor Palace was the subject of a renovation project at the end of the 19th century. XX, beginning of the century. XXI, by the architect Gastão da Cunha Ferreira, who maintained the fundamental characteristics of the building. Consisting of a multifunctional project, it integrated several aspects - restoration of the palace, a shopping centre, offices, a hotel and parking - concentrated in a single block in the heart of the capital.
