The Rectory of the University of Porto is a historic building located in Praça de Gomes Teixeira, in the city of Porto, in Portugal.
It is a rectangular neoclassical style building, initially intended for the Royal Academy of Marine and Commerce. The initial project was designed by Carlos Amarante and dates back to 1807. During the period of the French invasions and liberal wars, work on the building progressed very slowly. The unfinished building served as a hospital during the siege of Porto (1832-33). In 1833 the project was remodeled by J. C. Vitória Vila-Nova. The works continued and the initial project also underwent two major renovations, in 1862, by Gustavo Gonçalves e Sousa, and in 1898, by António Araújo e Silva.

The Porto Polytechnic Academy, the Colégio dos Orfãos, the Academia das Belas-Artes, the Liceu Nacional, the Industrial Institute (predecessor of ISEP; until 1933), the Technical Faculty (today the Faculty of Engineering; until 1937), operated in the building. the Faculty of Economics (until 1974) and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (until 2007).
The Rectory of the University of Porto is currently housed in this historic building, in addition to the Science Museum, and the Museums of Zoology, Geological Sciences and Archeology and Prehistory of the Institute of Anthropology.
National History Museum
The Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto is the result of a merger of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Porto and the Science Museum of the University of Porto and the Center of the Faculty of Sciences of the U.Porto. Created in 2015, this museum is divided into two parts: one located on the premises of the Historic Building of the Rectory of the U.Porto and another that integrates the Biodiversity Gallery and the Porto Botanical Garden. It has collections of geology, paleontology, zoology, archeology and ethnography, botany and science.
Fires
The building has already been the scene of two fires:
On April 20, 1974, a huge fire destroyed much of the building.
On May 5, 2008, a large fire broke out at 11:15 am.
The 2008 fire broke out late in the morning when explosions were heard and flames were seen coming out of the Rectory building of the University of Porto. The fire reportedly started on the roof of the building, which was undergoing restoration work. It was controlled at 12:55 pm and no injuries were reported. The damage caused by the fire to a section of the building's roof was restricted to a wing that was practically unoccupied.
