Built next to Boca do Inferno in the second half of the 17th century, it is part of the group of fortresses that defended the coast of Cascais, built by order of D. António Luís de Meneses, Count of Cantanhede, after the Restoration of national independence. It is, however, the only surviving building of a model that was also built in Cabo da Roca, Oitavos and Parede, although the coherence of its layout on the coast in relation to the remaining fortification complex remains to be explained.

Rectangular in plan, with just one vaulted compartment, which served as accommodation and storage, it had an external stone staircase, which provided access to a small flagged terrace, where the watchman on duty observed the horizon. In case of danger, the alarm bell on the west wall would ring. In 1805, it had a garrison made up of a corporal and a soldier.
