Hamas responds to the US ceasefire proposal with demands for a permanent ceasefire, Israeli troop withdrawal, and humanitarian guarantees.

The situation in Gaza has once again drawn global attention. Hamas recently issued an official response to the US-brokered ceasefire proposal, which Israel has already agreed to. Instead of simple acceptance or rejection, Hamas proposed significant amendments. These changes aim to ensure a truly permanent end to the war—not just a 60-day pause as originally outlined.

The United States, through President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, presented a ceasefire plan with several main points: a 60-day pause in hostilities, a phased hostage and prisoner exchange, delivery of humanitarian aid, and gradual Israeli troop withdrawal. The agreement also appoints the United States, Egypt, and Qatar as guarantors of the ceasefire’s implementation.

Hamas made it clear they do not fully reject the proposal. However, the group is demanding several key conditions to achieve real and lasting peace. The top requirement is a permanent end to hostilities and a full withdrawal of all Israeli troops from Gaza.

In addition, Hamas insists on uninterrupted humanitarian aid distribution. They seek a step-by-step exchange of hostages and prisoners as outlined in the agreement, and they want the ceasefire to signal a complete end to all Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Israeli government has agreed to the US-proposed ceasefire without any amendments. Israel firmly rejects all additional terms suggested by Hamas. The Israeli Defense Minister publicly warned Hamas to accept the proposal as it stands or face serious consequences.

Israel considers any changes to the proposal as outright rejection rather than renegotiation. Officials made clear that military action will continue if Hamas’ new terms are not accepted.

The United States, as chief mediator, gave a firm response to Hamas’ diplomatic maneuvering. Steve Witkoff called the group’s extra demands “unacceptable” and said they undermine further negotiation efforts. The US urges all parties to begin talks based on the existing proposal to ease civilian suffering in Gaza and pave the way for peace.

The prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas since October 7, 2023, has caused tremendous casualties. According to Gaza health authorities, more than 54,000 people have died due to attacks and blockades. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, especially in terms of access to food, clean water, and medical care. Humanitarian aid is a central focus of the US proposal, but the reality on the ground is often hampered by ongoing conflict.

While this proposal brings a glimmer of hope, differing stances between Hamas and Israel create uncertainty. Hamas urges assurances that all ceasefire terms will result in a permanent end to war, not just a temporary halt.

The United States, Israel, Egypt, and Qatar continue efforts as mediators, though the road to lasting peace remains difficult. The world now waits for concrete steps from both parties.
