Influencers have been around since the dawn of social media. However, they've often been associated with negative connotations ESPECIALLY in the web3 space. That said, I think we NEED 'influencers' in the Web3 space in order to survive.

First off, what's an influencer? I'm sure your definition varies from mine and the next degen but, ultimately, it's someone that we/people look to for information, guidance, advice, or just content. It's someone who is a pillar of a community (for better or worse). But why would we want or need a couple of people "controlling the narrative" and/or being the face of the Web3 community?

If you look at other industry, sports, social media, or technology, there's always someone (or a group of people) that are teaching, guiding, and establishing best practices for the space that they're in. This is especially important for a space in its infancy. An example is Elon Musk. As funny as it is to say, Elon's an influencer. He is an influencer in the auto industry, finance, and social media platforms... He's paved the way for the mass adoption of electric cars in an industry that's been the same for over 120 years.

New technologies need influencers to be adopted. TikTok, Snapchat, and AI all have/had influencers. BUT they need to be the RIGHT influencers. They need to be reliable, factual, and trustworthy. They need to be the people that will onboard the masses the right way. That's where you and I come in. We need to be vetting and ensuring that the people becoming the pinnacle of the space have these qualities. Otherwise, Web3 will continue to have the reputation of scammers, grifters, and the like.

All of this said I don't want to give off the impression that I think there are no good eggs in Web3. That's not the case at all. I think over the last several years, there are some people who have been change agents for the positive influencers. To name a few...

In conclusion, we need to do better. We need to promote the individuals who hold and present the qualities that we would like our industry to have and hold accountable those who do not. Otherwise, mass adoption will be incredibly difficult, if not, impossible.
