Imagine if every Farcaster user was given $1,000 today to help support more “interesting” content (however each individual defines “interesting”). How would you spend it? Assume the following rules: - spend it over the next week or lose it - no hoarding or trading - must be given to other people or projects, not to fund your own - no quid pro quo No need to think very broadly unless you want to. I’m curious how people might spend it to cultivate the niches that interest them.
I’ll add my answer to get the ball rolling. I would invest it in more giveaway challenges through /videolab to encourage video content across unexpected subject areas. Similar to the recent science challenge.
We had this with degen actually! But long term unfortunately it wasn’t sustainable
I really don’t know anything about degen or how it worked here. I’m curious! How did you decide where to allocate the 2-3k you were giving away?
Well, it was use it or lose it everyday. So there’s that, and it kept people engaged on the app! I had my favourite people I enjoyed tipping, like writers, artists I also tipped for Ukraine charities too. I would tip if the content was funny, made me laugh, or if that person was particularly helpful to me. I did get into a bit of minor controversy, because I had a lot to give away, so I started doing daily “questions” around mindfulness to spread out my tips. Like “who do you appreciate in your life” or “what’s one thing you’re grateful for today” to 1. Diversify who I was tipping to and 2. Make people more mindful. But others didn’t like it because they felt I was engagement farming (the algorithm at the time was more elementary, it technically would’ve boosted my engagement), and also people felt that degen should only reward “high quality” content that grows the network - unspoken etiquette. So I stopped doing it. But I regret that and should’ve continued because it was still within my value system to do so. And it was also my allocation to give out, otherwise it would’ve been lost in the nether!
I used to give away like $2-3k a month haha
I can tell you one thing I got was a laptop camera Reason being the age and storage on my phone has been an active hindrance to me filming something. I’ve been working on chipping away perceived boundaries until it’s natural to start
One of the (imaginary) rules is you can’t use the funds on yourself. Must be for others. What would you do with it instead? Also especially with Videolab I have been thinking about people’s phones a lot. This can be a serious barrier for creative work.

That’s incredible - I remember this! Do you have a write up anywhere of how it went? Curious if you’d do anything different in how you structured it if given the same funding again.
I’d set aside even more time for curation. It took me about 20 hours to do!!!!
was gonna say we had this with degen but realized getting $1k up front is a bit different. with degen, you could only tip it out in feed, incentivizing the content that you liked. if i got 1k usdc instead, i think itd be smarter to use it for onboarding, maybe find 5 hq creators id like to see here and offer them preloaded wallets
This is one of the most interesting and unique responses in my opinion. Many of the other replies focus on appreciation, which is so important. But appreciation doesn’t directly solve problem of growth.

Makes sense. Tipping, even in small amounts, helps people feel appreciated and stay connected. Would you use the collectibles features instead of $tipn and $degen? If not, why not?

What type of creators are you loving in particular? Any specific niches, or a broad range?
I love anyone who is getting out of their comfort zone and trying i am not picky as i know how hard it is to start

One of my favorites of the last few seasons is “That Time I Got Reincarnated as Slime” Instead of another isekai anime with an overpowered main character sent to another world to be the hero, our MC is reincarnated as a lowly slime monster! This comedy flips the genre on its head and the lovable cast of characters makes you cheer for the monsters to win. It’s refreshing and a fun lighthearted watch.
