Every Few Months, I Start a New Habit.
I know everything —and then some— about building habits. From the first step and up to success. I know when and what kind of crisis moments might arise. I know that not all habits are actually necessary for us, that some we simply copy from others because we believe they will lead us to success, just like they did for those others. To a success that we might not even need at all.
I understand how habits are linked to our goals. I can easily map them onto the wheel of life balance and help others trigger massive life changes by shifting just one habit.
And yet, despite all this, for several years now, I haven’t been able to build the habit of writing regularly. It feels like there’s some kind of internal block that neither knowledge nor magic can overcome.
My MacBook folders are filled with hundreds of scattered drafts. My Notion has long been gathering dust with outlines and ideas for my “big book.” This year, I finally forced myself to apply for a writing competition, got selected among over 1,000 applicants, and now a book with my short story is on its way to publication.
But neither pride in my achievements, nor childhood dreams, nor writing-related goals have pushed me toward consistency — even a small step toward regular publishing.
As someone with a background in psychology, I understand the possible reasons behind this. But when it comes to writing, my procrastination reaches its peak.
That’s why, starting on the first of the month (at least it’s not a Monday — that’s one of the worst day for mr to start anything), I made a commitment to finally start writing consistently. And to make sure I don’t give up on this, I’ve taken a few key steps — the same first steps that, in the end, should benefit not only me but others as well:
I subscribed to the First Draft Club.
I’m writing this first introductory post.
I’m going to share it publicly, cutting off my escape route.
If you, too, have been planning to start something, postponing it for ages, and procrastinating — let’s begin together.
I’ll help however I can. Here on Paragraph, I’ll be sharing hacks and insights on working with habits, making processes easier and more efficient, and perhaps, at some point, getting closer to that dream life.
Will be happy you to join me this journey here and on Farcaster
See you soon!
