For the past 13 years, I've worked in the asset management industry in some capacity. I started my career in back office operations for public equity & fixed income fund managers, then worked for portfolio managers in the deep value hedge fund space while getting my MBA. After graduating, I found an opportunity in venture capital, which eventually led to co-founding Tale Venture Partners—where we focused on software, deep tech and climate tech investments primarily at the pre-seed and seed stage.
Whether I realized it or not at the time, I've always gravitated towards the future or where I thought the world was heading. Call it a gift, sheer luck, or a combination—I'll gladly take it. This new chapter carries the same forward-looking perspective. One thing we can be certain of is change, and the world is undergoing many transformations as I type and you read this. A fair bet is that the next 25-50 years will look markedly different than the last 25-50 years. Among the many macro shifts occurring, one theme stands out: the world is becoming more globally interconnected, but in a new way.
This might sound contradictory as the current order of globalization evolves. But that is exactly my view—we're moving from a world where tech & culture is exported primarily from the US to the rest of the world, to a paradigm where opportunity is more distributed and tech, culture & commerce flow globally across regions. We're shifting from a unipolar world to a multi-polar, and in some cases regionalized, global landscape.
This trend is most apparent in culture where much innovation and impact now emanates internationally. Save for Beyoncé, Taylor Swift or Kung Fu Kenny, many of the most impactful artists today come from Latin Trap, Afrobeats, or talents like Hanumankind,Kalmi in India. Twenty years ago, the vast majority of the top 10 players in the NBA would have been American born; today, at least half of the top 10 NBA players list comprises international stars. This isn't to say the US is falling behind; rather, this macro shift highlights the dispersion of talent and opportunity worldwide.
New opportunities require new paradigms. To best participate in and catalyze this global dispersion of innovation, I recently launched Monte's Fam (named after the Count of Monte Cristo and General Alex Dumas—figures who represent transformation and overlooked excellence). The platform's mission is to help catalyze the next $1T in value creation globally, particularly in Africa & the Caribbean/LatAm. Our investment scope focuses on private market investments, initially beginning with VC & PE, driving capital to market segments and industries critical for growth over the next 50 years.
From a demographic perspective, the shift is clear; from a cultural paradigm, the shift is undeniable; from an innovation and investment lens, the shift is on the horizon. If you're interested in or want to learn more about our approach or investing in these regions, drop me a line. If you're building in these geographies and looking for investors with a global outlook & reach, please reach out! And if you know anyone working in these domains or investors who should get involved, feel free to connect the dots!
- Peace!
