Weekly I Ching - August 27 2023
PreambleIt feels like the pressure is on, and just when we need to rise to the occasion, exhaustion sets in. This is fated for all of us from time to time; it cannot be avoided. The Book of Changes tells us that one who lets their spirit be broken by exhaustion certainly has no success. Sometimes, all we can seek to do is to overcome a problem inwardly, in preparation to act outwardly at a more favourable time. Those who cultivate this inner approach to problem solving, without falling into m...

Weekly I Ching - November 9 2025
SummaryThe reading for this week is favourable. Abundance comes naturally, and those who understand the responsibility that comes with it are best fitted to maintain it. Reach for your goals, trust the competency of friends, and enjoy this time of harmony. The I Ching specifically gives us the image of a wagon this week. My interpretation is thus: when preparing for a large task or journey, we must be ready to set out with the supplies needed to ensure success. The wagon can safely handle a h...

Weekly I Ching - October 1 2023
PreambleThis week’s hexagram expresses a constellation of advice on the theme “holding firm”. It can be interpreted in multiple ways: holding together, holding back (restraint), and caring for others. It is presented in the image of a mountain, firm and still, with heavenly treasures hidden within. Take this image to heart, it is true that storing power within us can sometimes be a challenge in itself. The directing mind will want to send it somewhere to the ease the pressure. Wait. There wil...

When turbulence comes, there is often an instinctual response to tense up, and harden against whatever challenges us. There are times when this is helpful, and serves well. There are also situations where this is exactly the opposite of what’s best. The superior individual discerns this difference and instead relaxes, moving instead to dissolve divisions and negativity.
This is one of those moments. Any coming adversity or challenge may tempt you toward aggressive, focused action. Do not fall for it. Only through revitalising ourselves, seeking harmony, and taking an approach that favours diffusion over hardness can we find success this week.
1st: 9,8,8 > Changing Yin
2nd: 9,8,4 > Stable Yang
3rd: 5,4,8 > Stable Yin
4th: 9,8,8 > Changing Yin
5th: 5,8,8 > Stable Yang
6th: 5,8,8 > Changing Yang
The hexagram for this week is Huan, Dispersion/Dissolution.

Above: Sun, Wind
Below: K’an, Water
Dispersion. Success. The king approaches his temple. It furthers one to cross the great water. Perseverance furthers.

This week the hexagram has two lines in change, in the first and fourth places. The first line advises us to clear the air and settle any rising disputes early, before they become deeper misunderstandings.
The second councils those of us who are working toward shared or public goals. It emphasises the need to leave private relations out of public affairs. Only then can collective goals be achieved. I’ll end with an excerpt that captures the sentiment.
Six in the fourth place means: He dissolves the bond with the group. Supreme good fortune.
The 23rd of August marks what looks to be a volatile period astrologically, with two planets in retrograde (Mercury and Venus). Any large decisions or risks should be tempered against this in the coming weeks.
Blessings to you all.
