A feisty Manchester derby, drama at the top and bottom end of the table, upsets in unexpected places, and several disappointing results that left almost everyone's FPL team in shambles. Gameweek 22 had it all. We take a look back at the winners and losers of all that action before Premier League action resumes at the weekend.
Sunderland beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday, which means that the last time Crystal Palace won a Premier League game was on December 7. After the game against Sunderland, you could hear the frustration as Oliver Glasner complained about the way the club have gone about selling players. Losing Marc Guehi a day before a game must have been difficult for the management team to deal with, especially given the already thin squad Glasner has to work with. Jean Philippe-Mateta might be on his way out as well, if Palace are to get back to winning ways, they need some reinforcements in the January market, and fast.
Michael Carrick walked out to his first game as United manager against Manchester City with a completely different look from Amorim. Mainoo was back in the squad, Amad was freed of wingback duties and allowed to focus on the attacking side of the game, and Bruno was allowed to play further forward. United were in dire need of a reset to wash away the bad taste of Amorim's tenure, and what better way to get it than to put their rivals from across town to the sword? Not only did they beat City 2-0, but they dominated proceedings and could have run out with a 5-0 or 6-0 scoreline. In one game, Carrick managed to both get United going and erase any memories of Amorim at Old Trafford. We'll see if he can sustain it going forward.
West Ham rolled up to the Tottenham stadium after a string of subpar performances left them further adrift in the race to escape relegation. Nuno's boys needed a win for morale, and Thomas Frank's team handed it to them on a platter. This is the second game in a row where Tottenham have handed a win to a team in bad form with a long winless streak; last week, it was Bournemouth. The way Thomas Frank's team is playing at the moment is so bad I can't even find a justification for it. Whatever the extenuating circumstances may be, a team like Tottenham shouldn't be losing games like this. It's a wonder that Thomas Frank still has a job right now.
Like Manchester United, Chelsea has recently changed managers, albeit under less tumultuous circumstances. That notwithstanding, Liam Rosenior needed everything to go right in his first Premier League game, and everything did. Surely there'll be some complaints about aspects of the performance out there. However, a 2-0 win against a high-flying Brentford team is no easy feat, no matter the circumstance. A home win, a clean sheet, and a Cole Palmer goal, it's not a bad foundation for Liam Rosenior to build on for the rest of the season.
In case anyone needed even more proof that Manchester City is no longer the scary team they used to be, that battering by Manchester United provided it. And Pep didn't exactly field a weak team either. Rodri was back from injury, and Semenyo started fresh off his City debut in the FA Cup, and yet City never got a hold of the game. The loss was bad enough, but the nature of the loss made it worse. It doesn't seem like City have a title charge in them this season at all, as it is, they need to do all they can to remain the main contenders for the title, with Aston Villa breathing down their neck.
Leeds United's long unbeaten streak came to an end last gameweek as they fell to a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Newcastle, and they needed to bounce back against Fulham. And bounce back they did, the performance was tight, controlled and very much in keeping with the recent approach that has brought so much success for Daniel Farke's team. Fulham have been in good form of late, and they barely laid a glove on Leeds all game. And the icing on the cake was Lukas Nmecha grabbing a late winner in the 91st minute to give Leeds the win. Daniel Farke and Elland Road are one step closer to safety and securing a second season in the Premier League.
