The problem with making assumptions is that we believe they’re true. We don’t ask. We don’t clarify. We just run with the story we’ve invented in our heads — and before you know it, we’re living inside a fiction we wrote ourselves.
There’s a line from The Four Agreements that says:
"We make an assumption, we misunderstand, we take it personally, then we react by sending emotional poison with our word."
It’s wild how fast that cycle can play out. A pause in a conversation, a tone you misread, a message that doesn’t come when you expected it — and suddenly you’re spinning. I’ve been there. And what brought me back was this reminder:
Don’t make assumptions – discern the truth.
When we assume, we shortcut the truth. We close off curiosity. But when we choose to slow down and discern — to ask, to observe, to stay present — we give ourselves a shot at real clarity. Real peace.
So today, I’m staying open. I’m asking instead of assuming. I’m choosing clarity over emotional poison. And I hope you’ll join me. Let’s stop writing each other into imaginary stories and start living a little more honestly.
Drama-free, assumption-free — that’s the energy.
