Today is our second Artist Spotlight but our first of many interviews with artists onchain and beyond! Today we interviewed Sashelka. An artist who has had art follow her entire life. So let’s get into it!
SI:
When did you get into art?
SASHELKA:
I guess I’ve been creating my whole life. I was always drawing, taking photos, and acting in school theater. But I never really thought of myself as an artist. It all felt more like a hobby, something completely natural and ordinary. I never imagined that I would one day seriously call myself an artist or that my life would end up being connected with art in any meaningful way.
SI:
What was the catalyst?
SASHELKA:
My career path changed when I moved to another country. While I was trying to integrate, learn the language, and rebuild my life, I couldn’t work in my original profession. Back home I was a financier, but in the UK my qualifications didn’t really transfer.
At first I slowly started helping a friend with photo retouching, just to feel useful. That process reminded me how much I enjoyed working with images. Around the same time I began to reconnect with my old habit of drawing.
Everything became more intense after my son was born and received a medical diagnosis. He barely slept, so I barely slept with him. I started drawing at night, almost as a way to survive those long, exhausting hours.
People say art heals, and I think that’s exactly what happened to me.
SI:
What is your art style?
SASHELKA:
I experiment with different styles, but overall I would describe my work as dark art. Not because it’s something horrible or frightening. Dark art, for me, is about the side of ourselves we’re all a bit afraid of. We don’t really know how to accept our inner darkness, so we label it as evil.
But both light and dark exist in us at the same time. Becoming yourself in the world means accepting yourself as a whole, not in pieces. That’s why I often lean into darker imagery to express my emotions and my state of mind.
In terms of technique, I try many directions. Recently I explored surrealism, which was honestly fun and a bit ironic. Those are my oil paintings I haven’t shown off yet so yes, my style is constant in spirit, but always changing in shape.
SI:
How did you find NFTs and get into digital art?
SASHELKA:
My friend told me, you know you can sell your JPGs. I laughed at the idea, but she was serious. She introduced me to the crypto world and to NFTs, and what started as a joke turned into a new direction for my life.
SI:
What is your platform of choice?
SASHELKA:
My work minted across many platforms. Some of them are no longer active, and in some cases I burned works and moved them elsewhere, so it’s hard to point to just one. Right now, Objkt is probably the most active platform for me.
That said, the NFT market as a whole is in a downturn. Big movements are mostly happening only for very well-known artists. I don’t consider myself a popular artist, but I do have the support of friends and collectors 🖤
SI:
What type of music are you into?
SASHELKA:
I listen to a lot of different music, but if we’re talking about real preferences, it usually leans toward heavier sounds. Rock, alternative, even metal or death metal. But I’m very mood-driven, and I’m pretty open to all genres depending on the moment/mood 🙃
Sashelka is not only a deeply thoughtful artist, but a genuinely beautiful soul whose work comes from lived experience, vulnerability, and resilience. Her art explores the quiet spaces between light and dark with honesty and emotional depth, inviting viewers to sit with parts of themselves they may not always acknowledge. Each piece feels intentional, personal, and alive.
