Recently, I've been frequently asked about the types of investments that interest me. To provide some clarity, I thought it would be useful to outline them. Here are the five (and probably growing) macro trends that my team and I are currently tracking in the Web3 consumer space:
Emerging content monetization and distribution channels: Content businesses on the internet have traditionally relied on two major business models: advertising and subscription. I believe that the "content as NFT" concept in Web3 has the potential to introduce a few new monetization channels. Historically, such new channels often lead to new distribution methods. Startups tend to thrive on new distribution methods. This evolution excites me.
On chain gaming: The open nature of blockchain, underlying composability and decentralized governance modal gives us the conviction that the right web3 games are fundamentally community based. These games have the potential to become ever-expanding, living organisms with the capacity for long-term survival. Imagine how different life would be if humans could live for over 100 years. Now, consider what the game industry might look like if games possessed that same kind of longevity.
Marketplace: The marketplace business model has been around for over a century. However, with each technological paradigm shift, new types of marketplaces emerge. Decentralized governance, token incentives, on chain anonymity and transparency have already demonstrated advantages in enhancing liquidities for both supply and demand. NFT, DePin and RWA marketplaces are currently at the forefront of the consumer sector. I believe we will see even more new marketplace businesses in the near future.
Open social: I am very optimistic about the new paradigm shift in the social space. Social graphs have become a public good and are accessible to everyone. Recommendation algorithm is no longer proprietary. And now everyone has a new opportunity to rebuild their identity. But this time, it's on chain. With existing social networks already connecting people, what more do you think people would want from Web3 social?
AI: So far, the intersection of AI and Web3 has been largely focused on the infrastructure sector. However, beyond Web3, generative AI is driving significant adoption of consumer AI globally. I believe that crypto offers unique advantages in terms of monetization and incentive mechanisms. The key question is how these can be seamlessly integrated into generative AI applications.
Blockchain is a rebellion technology, serving as a counterbalance to our overly centralized society. If you are one of those rebels who are working on exciting consumer ideas, I am eager to hear from you.
