Taking in afternoon tea, I was able to capture a few photographs of this resplendent retreat, the height of opulence in the heart of Funchal's lush gardens and panoramic coastline. Reid's Hotel effortlessly combines timeless elegance with modern sophistication, making it the perfect haven for discerning travelers seeking a luxurious escape on the beautiful island of Madeira.
The history of Reid's Hotel dates back to the late 19th century when it was founded by Scottish entrepreneur William Reid. As a visionary, he dreamt of building a luxurious hotel where wealthy travelers could experience ultimate comfort and indulge in Madeira's natural beauty. Over the years, Reid's Hotel has hosted numerous distinguished guests, including illustrious figures such as Winston Churchill and George Bernard Shaw, who sought refuge in this opulent sanctuary. Today, this iconic hotel stands as a testament to its rich heritage, offering visitors an unforgettable blend of historic charm and contemporary amenities.
Fun facts about Reid's Hotel include its breathtaking location atop a cliff, providing unbeatable views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city of Funchal. The hotel’s extensive wine cellar contains over 400,000 bottles, including some rare Madeira wines dating back to the 1800s. Additionally, the hotel has embraced environmental sustainability by cultivating its own organic garden, supplying the kitchens with fresh produce and reducing their carbon footprint. These unique aspects contribute to the exclusive allure of Reid's Hotel, making it a truly remarkable and unforgettable experience for guests.
The most luxurious room at Reid's Hotel is the Presidential Suite, commanding a staggering price for its opulent offerings. Boasting an expansive living area, sumptuous furnishings, and stunning ocean views, guests can immerse themselves in the pinnacle of luxury. With a private terrace, personalized butler service, and exclusive access to the hotel's finest amenities, the Presidential Suite caters to even the most discerning of travelers, ensuring an unparalleled experience in lavish comfort and elegance.
Anyone can visit for afternoon tea, including your’s truly and his wife Tina. We visited mid-afternoon on Thursday this week for just 39 euros each, we tucked into scrumptious sandwiches, scones and cakes overlooking the stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean, the coast of Funchal and framing this view, were the stunning gardens that have been cultivated over the past 130 years.
Maybe we sat in the same spot Sir Winston Churchill did back in the day. The former prime minister enjoyed this beautiful lush island as much as anyone and he would often be seen painting in the gardens of the famous hotel.
The choice of teas were broad and varied we both opted for various fruit teas, served in stunning teapots, I was terrified of dropping, everything was just plain beautiful!
The service was impeccable and we really would like to praise in particular a lady by the name of Cindy, she was very friendly and was very excited to hear about my blog. I gave her the address for it, so will be nice if the staff at the hotel, get to read this!
