Increasingly convinced that how hard you can work is a narrow range function of personality on all but the dumbest deterministic tasks. For anything even moderately complex the only way to radically increase return is to radically increase risk. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck and your rent goes up 10% you can work 10% harder but if rent doubled you have to take the risk of working differently not harder. Intelligence doesn’t help much because most people are already operating at the limit of their intelligence so effort-return equation already includes that.

Watching a process manager thrash in weird confusion over a complicated and stressful paperwork process that shouldn’t be hard to keep straight if you’re paying proper attention. Made me realize that detail orientation is about both caring about getting things right and never letting things go. But good detail people know how to balance both over time. Sometimes let things be wrong or let them go for a while as you spiral inwards in wrongness vs incompleteness phase space towards the origin. Sometimes lurching up in one or the other, introducing steps into the spiral.

I don’t know about an AI singularity, but plenty of humans are vanishing past their personal singularities riding AIs. It’s kinda funny to watch. They get on some agentic horse and go vrooom hypomanic away beyond all peer comprehensibility. At this rate soon we won’t need explainable AIs but explainable AI-augmented humans.

It’s now almost exactly 15y as a free agent for me. Forget the exact date but it was sometime in February 2011 that I quit my first and last real job, at Xerox.

Yesterday for the first time since I started my 10k steps thing 7 weeks ago, I did my steps mostly on a treadmill because the rain was too much even for me. It was horrible and boring. Took 20% less time but felt 2x longer. Outdoor steps are 10x the value for mental state, fresh air, and sunlight

I’ve had some sort of lingering post viral fatigue in the evenings for a few weeks now. The original infection was just a few days of very mild cough, sniffles, and sore throat but the tail is long drawn out and annoying. Mornings start out normal but I’m wiped by evening. Slowly improving but it’s been 3 weeks already 😫 These recoveries from minor winter infections take longer every year. Every year ugly new secrets of aging are revealed that they hide from the under 50 young ‘uns. It’s the biggest conspiracy nobody talks about. The ailments of age are a journey of lonely discovery of undocumented parts of the human condition. The only old people who talk about what aging is like are the obscenely healthy ones who preach endless sermons about their blessed exceptional states.
