Erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wurde »Castrum Swangowe« im Jahre 1090. Damit gemeint waren zwei im Mittelalter an der Stelle des heutigen Schlosses Neuschwanstein stehenden Burgen Vorderhohenschwangau und Hinterhohenschwangau.
