Writing about Nouns almost always sounds generic. I could list the projects that have already been funded, the ones currently up for vote, the ones I’ve personally taken part in, or even talk about the subcommunities.
In the article below, I tried to condense everything as much as possible. But know this: if you decide to dive into this universe, you’ll discover something much bigger than can fit in one article.
But let’s go…
Imagine a place on the internet where all decisions are made by people building things together every day. It’s not a closed club, nor a regular company. It’s an open, creative community full of ideas.
I know it sounds a little weird. And it is.
Welcome to the universe of Nouns DAO.
Before anything else, let’s understand what a DAO is. DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization.
Sounds complex, right? But think of it this way:
An organization is a group of people doing something together.
Autonomous means it runs by itself, without a boss calling all the shots.
Decentralized means there’s no single “owner.” Decisions are made by the group.
So a DAO is like a team that gathers to build something, but instead of meeting at school or work, they meet on the blockchain. And everything is decided democratically, by voting.
Now that you know what a DAO is, let’s talk about one that’s a reference in creativity and innovation: Nouns DAO.
Nouns DAO was born in 2021. And it all started with… square glasses.
Seriously! A drawing of big, blocky glasses. That became the symbol of the "Nouns."
Every day, a new character wearing those glasses, called a Noun, is automatically generated by code and auctioned online. One per day. They’re unique, like digital trading cards.
These characters are NFTs. But don’t worry, we’ll explain what that means in a second.
They may look simple, but each Noun holds something powerful: it represents a vote and a share of the DAO’s treasury.
The project was created by a group of developers and designers known for using pseudonyms. They were already active in the Web3 community and set out to build something radically open, where value comes from consistency, community, and collective creativity, not hype or artificial scarcity.
The idea: one Noun would be auctioned every day, forever.
No “season,” no “limited collection.” Just a never-ending stream of characters.
NFT stands for non-fungible token. It means that it’s one-of-a-kind and can’t be swapped for another like it, think of it like a Picasso painting or a rare action figure.
While currencies like $10 or 1 Bitcoin are interchangeable (they’re “fungible”), an NFT is a collectible item, digital, but unique.
In Nouns DAO, each Noun is an NFT: a quirky character with the signature square glasses and a look generated by code. One might have a pineapple head, or a hotdog body, or look like a laptop. Anything’s possible.
And it’s all stored on the Ethereum blockchain, where anyone in the world can verify who owns which Noun and how much was paid for it.
When someone buys a Noun, the money goes to a shared treasury controlled by the community: the Nouns DAO treasury.
That treasury has already moved over $50 million in ETH.
Anyone can propose how to use this money, to support projects, help people, make art, spread Nouns culture, create products, films, events, and more.
But for a project to be funded, it needs to be voted on.
And the people who vote? Noun holders. Each Noun = 1 vote.
One of the most beautiful things about Nouns DAO is that everything is open:
The art? Open source.
The website? Open.
The ideas? Open.
You can use Nouns however you want: make a T-shirt, a comic, a plush toy, a video game, without asking permission.
That’s called public domain IP (CC0). It means the Nouns belong to everyone.
Imagine if Mickey Mouse belonged to the public, and anyone could make a movie with him, without lawsuits. With Nouns, that’s real.
The main place where the community gathers to brainstorm, vote, and collaborate is Discord.

This is the fun part. Nouns DAO has already funded:
Sports teams (surfers, skaters, and more)
Short films and animations
Toy collections
Educational apps for kids
Workshops in favelas and public schools
Relief campaigns for natural disaster victims
Clothing lines, art exhibitions, and street murals
All of it made by the community, for the world.
Nouns DAO’s governance is fully on-chain, meaning everything happens transparently on the blockchain through smart contracts.
Here’s how it works:
A proposal is submitted
Voting opens
Each Noun equals 1 vote
If a majority says “yes” and quorum is reached, it’s approved
The funds are automatically released to the proposer’s wallet
You don’t need to own a Noun to submit a proposal, but you’ll need holders to support it.
Lil Nouns are like Nouns’ little siblings, smaller, born faster: one every 15 minutes.
They follow the same idea: each Lil Noun grants voting rights in the Lil Nouns DAO.
Since they’re more affordable, they’ve become a gateway for new people entering the Nouns ecosystem.
Lil Nouns also fund creative and educational ideas, community-based projects, and diversity initiatives in Web3.
Many current Nouns contributors started their journey in the Lil Nouns DAO.
No fixed roadmap. The community builds the future.
No artificial hype. Growth comes from consistency and culture.
CC0 code and art. It belongs to everyone.
Infinite auctions. A new Noun every day.
Fully on-chain. Even the Noun's pixels live on the blockchain.
Shared treasury. The money belongs to the community, not a founder.
It’s like a collaborative online game with real-world impact.
Because Nouns DAO is showing us a new way to build together with transparency, collaboration, and imagination.
It proves we can use technology to support art, education, sports, gaming, culture, inclusion, social impact, all without bosses, corporations, or red tape.
Nouns DAO is a story still being written. Maybe by you.
Perhaps the most beautiful thing about Nouns DAO is that it’s not finished.
It’s alive, unfolding every day.
Growing, failing, learning, like a story written in real time, with hundreds of authors around the world.
And that’s powerful.
Because Nouns DAO wasn’t born from a company. It was born from an idea.
And good ideas, when nurtured, can outlive any trend or tech.
They can change the way we collaborate, how we invest in culture, and how we imagine what’s possible together.
You don’t need to be a blockchain expert.
You don’t need to know everything about DAOs.
You just need to be open to imagining a world where people build amazing things together with transparency, freedom, and creativity.
And when someone asks you what is Nouns DAO, maybe you’ll just smile… and send them this article.
